In the OLS survey model, language-discordant participants significantly more often reported that they desired to ask more questions but were limited by a language barrier (language-concordance β = 0.892, p = 0.001) (Table 5). This self-report supplies a plausible mechanism for the observed reduction in patient-initiated questions in discordant visits: the barrier itself suppressed question-asking rather than a lack of desire to ask.
