Xue (2019). Interpreter proxy versus healthcare interpreter for administration of patient surveys following arthroplasty: a pilot study. BMC Med Res Methodol.

Description #

The two single-item global PROMs showed substantial proxy-versus-interpreter agreement (Table 3): patient satisfaction with the operation ("How would you describe the results of your operation," 5-point scale) had kappa = 0.75 with a mean difference of 0.01, and operation success ("how are the problems ... now compared to before your operation," 5-point scale) had kappa = 0.70 with a mean difference of −0.02. Both mean differences were negligible on the 1–5 scale.

"Satisfaction 0.75 - - 0.01 - 0.86" (Xue, 2019, p. 5, Table 3)

"Success 0.70 - - -0.02 - 0.71" (Xue, 2019, p. 5, Table 3)

Methods Context #

What? #

The observable: agreement between the two administration methods on the satisfaction and success single-item global ratings (each a 5-point ordinal scale).

"Satisfaction: 'How would you describe the results of your operation' (a 5-point Likert scale - 'excellent'-1, 'very good'-2, 'good'-3, 'fair'-4, 'poor'-5)." (Xue, 2019, p. 2)

How? #

Ordinal paired scores from each participant's two randomised interviews were compared with quadratic-weighted Cohen's kappa. See A-0009.

"Ordinal data were analysed using quadratic weighted Cohen's kappa coefficients... to assess the magnitude of agreement between interpreter proxy and healthcare interpreter." (Xue, 2019, p. 3)

Who? #

85 LEP hip or knee arthroplasty patients at their routine 6-month registry follow-up.

"Eighty-five patients successfully received both methods of follow-up calls and were included in the data analysis." (Xue, 2019, p. 3)

Other Notes #

The satisfaction mean difference of 0.01 (score range 1–5) is the abstract's lower bound for mean differences ("0.01 (score range of 1–5)").
